"This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church." – Ephesians 4:13-15
With the new year, it seems that a trend is starting with so many "Christians" who are posting videos of people were Christians but are no longer Christians for reasons that in my opinion aren't based on facts or reality. The sad part about the whole thing is that so many people in the body of Christ are so immature and ignorant to who Jesus really is, that they are being blown away any time someone offers them lies that meets the standards that falls within their comfort zone! The truth of the matter is that so many people today are rejecting truth for a lie because we are content with staying babes in Christ. We are satisfied with our Sunday school level of spirituality. The problem with this is that when you are a child you can be easily tricked, confused, and lead to a dangerous place. When my son was five my wife and I preached to him daily about not talking to and following strangers. We really drilled this into his head, and every so often we would test him with questions like "If a stranger said your mommy sent me to pick you up, would you go with them?" And he would respond with a resounding NO DADDY, he really got the whole stranger danger thing. But then there were times when I would say to him, if someone said that they had some Airheads (which are his favorite candy) and they said that it was in their car would you go? And he would respond with a resounding YES DADDY. Because of his immaturity he was able to be tricked. In both situations the danger was still very much present, but what happened was in his immaturity, though he was able to do the right thing when the danger was more evident, when he was faced with something that spoke to his desires and not his father's, he abandoned the teachings of his father and was willing to embrace a lie that would lead to danger because he thought it would satisfy him. Through this experience I learned that the danger of being an immature Christian, is that you live according to your own desires and standards instead of the standards of Christ. The consequences from this are that we live our lives like children who are easily tricked to believe anything if the lie looks tasty enough.
I want to challenge everyone today to GROW UP by studying for YOURSELF who God is and His desires for your life! Get to know Him! When you truly know Him, then no one can persuade you to believe lies about Him! Ask yourself, “What standard am I measuring my life and decision making? Are you living according to a standard that is rooted in you and societal norms or are you trying to fully measure up to the standard of God? People try to mask rebellion against Christ as religious freedom, but the truth of the matter is that what we are really desiring is the freedom to do whatever we want without being held accountable for our actions.
My last plea is that if you are a believer in Christ, stand for what you believe. Become a student of what you believe so that you may grow into a strong, mature Christian. Build the foundation of your spirituality on the Word of God so that when the wind of lies, false teachings and half-truth blow your way, you will be able to recognize it and you will be able to stand strong and not be moved because you are rooted in what's REAL, TRUTH, and LOVE!
