Normally, February is the month where we celebrate love and focus our affections on those closest to us. It is also a time where we as believers, celebrate God who is love. But is that all? If we can take an account of the people we show our love to this Valentines season, I would wager that the list is small. It is because of this, that I encourage us all to expand our reach. All around us are the unloved – persons that due to one unfortunate circumstance or another often miss out on the warmth and the depths of love that you enjoy. For them, live has replaced love with brokenness.
Not too long ago, I was talking to a young woman who was kicked out of her home and was now on the run from an abusive relationship with no more than a book bag and a bus ticket. Although she appeared to be fine on the outside, a few moments of conversation and prayer had left her in unashamed and very public tears. Friends, when you have been hurt or broken...and I'm talking about some serious brokenness (like the one I just referred to); the world as you know it and the perspective you once had changes dramatically. How can you believe in people again? How do you trust again and why did God allow people to go through THIS much pain? This is the sentiment of the downcast.
If this is you, there is hope. We serve a God whose love never fails us. Even through times of loss and brokenness, the Bible says that, “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). This is great news. This means that whatever you go through, God is right there to strengthen you in it and in time, you can use your temporary circumstance to bring glory to our God (v.15). God's love for you and the promise of an eternity with Him far exceeds whatever "light affliction" you may endure. So this month, regardless of the blessing or hardship that you may experience, know that God is sovereign over all things and that He is surely keeping you so that though you are weak, in Him you are made strong. As we continue through the month, let's be mindful to not only love on those closest to us, but love on those who may be feeling a sense of brokenness, and let's point then to hope and strength that can only be found in Jesus the Christ. God bless you.
